ReelShort vs DramaBox: ReelShort lists 60 coins an episode and 8 to 13 free episodes; DramaBox publishes neither. Ratings and App Store prices compared.

Four number cards comparing ReelShort and DramaBox: free episodes, coin price per episode and App Store age rating

ReelShort tells you what an episode costs; DramaBox does not. That single gap decides most of the ReelShort vs DramaBox question, because a drama is only free until the paywall. Pick the app whose price you can see, unless the drama you want lives only on the other one.

TL;DR: ReelShort's coin guide says a standard episode usually costs 60 coins and 500 coins cost $4.99; its drama pages print where premium episodes begin. DramaBox publishes neither on its website. DramaBox wins on ratings (4.75 from 879,659 on the App Store) and is rated 17+; ReelShort is 12+. Checked Oct 18, 2026.

Verdict: Use ReelShort if you want to know the cost before you start. Use DramaBox if a drama you want is only there, and set a spending cap first. Prices checked Oct 18.

Overview: ReelShort vs DramaBox at a glance

ReelShort is sold on the App Store by New Leaf Publishing, Inc. TechCrunch described its maker in 2023 as "Sunnyvale-based Crazy Maple Studio". It is rated 12+. It publishes a coin guide on its own site and a free-episode line on every drama page we opened. Its numbers are on our ReelShort app page.

DramaBox is sold by STORYMATRIX PTE. LTD; its about page says it "is a product of StoryMatrix, a Singapore-registered company". It is rated 17+. It says it reaches "over 200 countries and regions, featuring more than 2,000 series" as of December 2024. Its numbers are on our DramaBox app page.

Price: ReelShort vs DramaBox

ReelShort's coin guide is plain about it: "Once the paywall appears, a standard episode usually costs 60 coins. With 500 coins priced at $4.99, that works out to roughly $0.60 per episode." Its packs add bonus coins as they grow: $9.99 buys 1,000 plus 150, $14.99 buys 1,500 plus 300, $29.99 buys 3,000 plus 750.

DramaBox has no page like that. We looked on dramabox.com and its support site and found no coin price, no free-episode rule and no check-in rule. The only DramaBox price list we can read is the App Store's: "Membership" at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, and "Special offer" at $4.99, $9.99 and $19.99.

Table of the in-app purchase items listed on the ReelShort and DramaBox App Store pages, with prices from $4.99 to $29.99 Table: ShortDramaDesk, from the App Store listings, Oct 18.

Desk note: With ReelShort's prices we can work out a total: the 13 ReelShort chart dramas we priced cost $14.97 to $39.96 to finish. For DramaBox the same sum cannot be done. The cost calculator only lists apps that publish a price.

Winner on price: ReelShort, because it is the only one of the two that says what an episode costs.

Free episodes and rewards

ReelShort's guide says "Typically, the first 8 to 13 episodes of most series are completely free to watch." Its drama pages print the exact line, such as "Premium episodes begin at episode 12." On 19 chart titles the median was 8 free episodes. Its free-coins page adds rewards: up to 165 coins for daily check-ins, up to 175 from ads, 50 for logging in.

DramaBox's drama pages we read showed no free count. Its rewards may exist inside the app, but we could not find them on an official page, so we do not list them.

Winner on free episodes: ReelShort, because it publishes the number.

Ratings and reach

DramaBox wins here. On the US App Store it had 4.75 from 879,659 ratings against ReelShort's 4.69 from 510,050. On Google Play the gap is wider: DramaBox 4.6 from 5.58M reviews, ReelShort 3.8 from 1.94M. Both list 100M+ installs on Google Play.

Money runs the other way. TechCrunch, citing Appfigures, reported ReelShort at "roughly $1.2 billion in gross consumer spending in 2025, up 119% from 2024", and DramaBox at $276 million, "more than doubling its 2024 numbers". Sensor Tower's in-app estimate for Q1 2025 was closer: $130 million against $120 million.

Bar chart of revenue estimates: ReelShort about $1.2 billion and DramaBox $276 million in 2025, and $130 million vs $120 million in Q1 2025 Chart: ShortDramaDesk, from TechCrunch (Appfigures) and Sensor Tower.

More ratings, less money. DramaBox's viewers rate; ReelShort's viewers pay. Neither number says which app is better to watch on.

Winner on ratings: DramaBox, because it leads on both stores.

DramaBox in its own words

What viewers say

The newest App Store reviews for both apps are about money.

  • ReelShort, Oct 16, one star: "Although I’ve enjoying watching some clips is far too expensive and I’ve been trying to cancel my subscription and it’s been charging me every week" (App Store)
  • DramaBox, Oct 16, one star: "The dramas may be good but it will take you a week or more to earn enough coins to watch a full short." (App Store)
  • On r/ShortDramas, April 2026: "the numerous ads on DramaBox took up too much of my time" (Reddit)

Two apps, one complaint. If a weekly charge is the problem, cancel it in your phone's subscription settings, not only by deleting the app.

Analysis: who should use which

If you want to know what a drama costs before you start, use ReelShort: its price and its paywall line are both public. If you watch only free episodes, ReelShort again, because you can see where they end. If the drama you saw in an ad is a DramaBox title, there is no way around DramaBox; set a cap before you buy coins. If you share a phone with a teenager, note that the App Store rates DramaBox 17+.

Our apps compared guide puts both next to 11 other apps.

Our take

Start with ReelShort; pay on DramaBox only for a drama ReelShort does not have. ReelShort publishes 60 coins an episode and a free count on every page we opened. DramaBox publishes neither, even with 879,659 App Store ratings behind it. If DramaBox posts a coin price, we will redo this comparison; we check both every 30 days.

What we don't know yet

  • DramaBox's coins per episode and free-episode rule: not on any official page we found.
  • Whether Crazy Maple Studio and New Leaf Publishing are one company: no source we read says so.

How we checked this

On Oct 18, 2026 we read ReelShort's coin guide and free-coins page by hand, DramaBox's home and about pages, and both App Store and Google Play listings (App Store figures through Apple's iTunes Lookup API). Both apps' terms forbid automated access, so no page was read by a script. Reviews come from the App Store's public review feed. We did not buy coins on either app.
