Is ReelShort AI-Generated? 6 of 21 Say Yes, 15 Say Real Cast

Is ReelShort AI-generated? Some titles are, and each drama page says so. Of 21 we read, 6 are AI and 15 have a real cast; how to find the real-actor ones.

Four number cards: 6 ReelShort titles labelled AI-generated, 15 with a real cast, 85 with no answer read, and 222 of 250 September releases labelled AI per GASP

Ask ReelShort's blog and the answer to is ReelShort AI is no: the app "is not an AI-generated platform". Its drama pages tell a more mixed story. Of the 21 ReelShort dramas whose answer we read, 6 say they are AI-generated and 15 say they were made by a real cast and crew. Your choice is simple: read the one-line answer before episode 1, or filter for real actors only.

TL;DR: ReelShort labels AI title by title ("an AI-generated animated ReelShort original production") and says it puts an "AI generated" watermark on those posters. On our list: 6 AI, 15 real cast, 85 not answered yet. GASP counted 222 of 250 new ReelShort releases in September 2026 as labelled AI, up from 0 of 19 in January. Our "Real actors only" filter shows only the titles whose page says no. Checked Oct 21, 2026.

As of Oct 21, 2026: labels, episode counts and prices as ReelShort listed them, with the read dates below. Labels can change; we recheck and log changes here.

Key Takeaways

  • ReelShort says both things: not an AI platform as a whole, AI on some titles.
  • Per title: each drama page answers "Is {title} AI-generated?" with yes or no.
  • Our count: 6 yes, 15 no, 85 without an answer read (Mature titles left out).
  • The trend: 222 of 250 September releases labelled AI, by GASP's count.
  • Real actors only: our filter uses the app's "no", never a guess.

Overview: is ReelShort AI, in its own words?

ReelShort answered the question itself in a blog post on Sep 24: "Owned by Crazy Maple Studio, ReelShort is not an AI-generated platform." The same post then says the app "has a separate category called 'Anime' where you can find the hottest AI-generated verticals." Both are true at once. ReelShort makes filmed dramas with actors and also carries AI-generated ones.

The useful part is how it marks them. The post says: "On every AI-generated movie on ReelShort, you can find the 'AI generated' watermark on the movie poster thumbnail." Each drama page also has a FAQ line. Two real answers, word for word:

  • "Yes. Demigod Under Oath is an AI-generated animated ReelShort original production."
  • "No. The Heiress Strikes Back is not AI-generated. It is a ReelShort original production created by a real cast and crew."

Every AI answer we read says "animated". By ReelShort's own word, these titles are animated, not filmed.

Table of the six ReelShort titles labelled AI-generated, with episodes, free episodes, cost to finish and release date Table: ShortDramaDesk, from ReelShort's drama pages (Oct 18), ReelShort's partner catalog (RS Boost, Oct 21) and ReelShort's coin guide.

The full list, with posters and the app's own answers, is on our AI-made short dramas page.

Analysis: AI titles against real-cast titles

ReelShort's coin guide gives one standard price, "a standard episode usually costs 60 coins", and nothing different for AI titles. The difference is length.

Table comparing medians: 6 AI-labelled ReelShort titles at 45 episodes, 9.5 free, $19.98 to finish, against 15 real-cast titles at 59 episodes, 9 free, $24.97 Table: ShortDramaDesk, from ReelShort's drama pages, partner catalog and coin guide, Oct 21.

The AI titles run a median of 45 episodes against 59 for the real-cast ones, so they cost less to finish: $19.98 against $24.97 by our math. Free episodes barely differ, 9.5 against 9. Fourteen fewer episodes, five dollars saved: the discount is in the episode count, not the coin.

Desk note: All 6 AI-labelled titles on our list were released between Jul 29 and Sep 9 this year, by the dates in ReelShort's partner catalog. The 15 real-cast titles span July 2024 to October 2026. On our list, the AI arrived in one summer.

GASP, a watch guide that reads ReelShort's labels across its public shelves, saw the same turn at scale. Its research page counts ReelShort's new dramas by how they were made: "ReelShort's new releases turned to AI during 2026: 0 of 19 in Jan 2026, 222 of 250 in Sep 2026."

Bar chart of ReelShort's new dramas by month in 2026, filmed against labelled AI, from 19 filmed and 0 AI in January to 26 filmed and 222 AI in September Chart: ShortDramaDesk, from GASP, "Short dramas in numbers", gasptv.com/research, Oct 15, 2026 (CC BY 4.0).

GASP's method matches ours on one point that matters. Its score page says: "A drama with no AI label is not automatically live action, so we only call a drama live action when ReelShort's page says it was filmed."

Why ReelShort is making AI dramas

Money, by the founder's account. Deadline reported in June that ReelShort's founder, Joey Jia, said AI tools had cut costs by around 90%. He also drew a line: "I don't believe AI can write a great story. But it can help us with pre-vis, creating sets, background, compositing, help us to make a different kind of story."

The wider market is moving faster. Xinhua reported in September, citing China's broadcast regulator, that AI-made productions made up "more than 90 percent of the country's micro-dramas released in the first eight months of 2026." That is China's market, not ReelShort's US catalog. Business Insider reported this month that TikTok's CEO believes the "overwhelming majority" of short dramas now being produced use AI models.

How to find ReelShort dramas with real actors only

  1. Read the drama page's FAQ. "Is {title} AI-generated?" gets a yes or a no.
  2. Look at the poster. ReelShort says AI titles carry an "AI generated" watermark on the thumbnail.
  3. Skip the AI category in the app. ReelShort's blog calls it "Anime" in one paragraph and "AI-generated" in another.
  4. Use our filter. Real actors only lists titles whose page says "not AI-generated". Titles with no answer go under unknown, never under live action.

Unknown is the biggest group on our list, 85 ReelShort titles. For most of them we have the partner catalog's episode counts but have not read the page's AI line yet. That is our gap, not ReelShort's.

What viewers say

The loudest complaint we found is not about ReelShort. It is about AI dramas surfacing on YouTube. A post on r/CDrama on Oct 15 had a score of 187 when we read it:

  • "I just want actual actors." (Reddit, r/CDrama)
  • "I really wish YouTube had a way to filter out AI-generated videos." (same post)

ReelShort's per-title answer is that filter, inside one app. Elsewhere, viewers still find out after they click.

Our take

Start with the 15 real-cast titles if you want actors; check the FAQ line before episode 1 of anything new. ReelShort labels its AI titles plainly, and 6 of the 21 answers we read say AI. GASP's count of 222 AI-labelled releases in September says new titles lean AI now. If you like the animated ones, they are shorter and a median $4.99 cheaper to finish. We recheck the labels every 30 days and add titles as we read them.

What we don't know yet

  • The AI answer for 85 of the 106 ReelShort titles on our list: we have not read those pages' AI line.
  • How many AI titles ReelShort carries in total: it publishes no count. GASP's figures cover the shelves it read.
  • Whether "AI-generated animated" covers voices too: the answers do not say.

How we checked this

The per-title answers come from ReelShort's drama pages, read on Oct 18 by hand or by our slow catalog reader (21 non-Mature titles with an answer). Episode counts, free episodes and release dates come from ReelShort's partner catalog (RS Boost), checked Oct 18 to Oct 21. Costs are our arithmetic: locked episodes times 60 coins, paid with the cheapest mix of ReelShort's coin packs. We read ReelShort's blog post on AI and GASP's research page on Oct 21; GASP's figures are used under its CC BY 4.0 licence with the credit it asks for. The Reddit post was read through the Arctic Shift archive. We did not watch the dramas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ReelShort AI-generated? Some of it is. ReelShort answers title by title on each drama page. Of the 21 ReelShort dramas whose answer we read (Mature titles left out), 6 say "AI-generated animated" and 15 say "created by a real cast and crew". ReelShort's own blog says the app "is not an AI-generated platform".

Are ReelShort actors real? For its live-action titles, ReelShort's pages say so. Pages such as Just One Kiss and The Heiress Strikes Back say they are "a ReelShort original production created by a real cast and crew". Its AI titles say "AI-generated animated" instead, so check the answer on each drama page.

How can I tell if a ReelShort drama is AI? Read the FAQ on the drama's page: "Is {title} AI-generated?" gets a yes or no. ReelShort's blog says every AI-generated title also carries an "AI generated" watermark on its poster thumbnail, and that the app has a dedicated AI category. No answer on the page means unknown.

How many ReelShort dramas are AI? ReelShort does not publish a total. GASP, a watch guide that reads ReelShort's labels, counted 222 of 250 new ReelShort dramas released in September 2026 as labelled AI, up from 0 of 19 in January. On our own list, 6 of the 21 answers we read say AI.

Are AI dramas on ReelShort cheaper to finish? Shorter, so a little cheaper. ReelShort's coin guide gives one standard price for both, 60 coins an episode. The 6 AI-labelled titles we priced have a median of 45 episodes and cost a median $19.98 to finish by our math; the 15 real-cast titles have 59 episodes and $24.97.

Where can I find short dramas with real actors only? Use our drama finder's "Real actors only" filter, which lists only titles whose own page says they were not AI-generated. On Oct 21 that was 15 ReelShort dramas. A drama whose page gives no answer is shown as unknown, never as live action.
