Story

Mia is small, homeless and secretly magical. After she helps the head of the wealthy Lancaster family, he takes her in as his own. Then his grandson Jasper, who already uses a wheelchair, slips into a coma, and Mia tries to heal him in secret. She gets caught mid-spell, branded a black witch, and when Jasper starts coughing blood, the girl who wanted to save him is the one everyone blames.

Full story (spoilers)

Sir Bernard Lancaster collapses on a rainy street and is looked after by Mia, a homeless child with nobody to go home to. He adopts her on the spot, and on the drive home she shocks him by talking with cats. At the estate she meets Jasper, his grandson, paralysed since the crash that killed his parents, and Freya, his granddaughter, who calls Mia a street beggar. When a lamppost topples toward Jasper, Mia uses hidden powers to pull him clear and faints from the effort; the adoption becomes official and Freya's envy sets hard. At dinner the maid and Freya sneer at Mia's manners until Jasper defends her, and moments later he collapses into a coma. Sir Bernard confides that he has spent years searching for a legendary White Witch said to cure any pain. Mia tries her own healing magic at night, Freya bursts in calling it dark witchcraft, and when Jasper coughs up blood she urges their grandfather to banish Mia.
